New Zealand - Kiwiana

Have you heard of Kiwiana I hadn't until I received a Culture Swap package from a lovely family from New Zealand which contained a fantastic explanation and examples!

Kiwiana is basically the name given to the collection of images that represent fun things that evoke a feeling of being typically Kiwi. They can be old things, new things, toys, items of clothing - basically anything that would make someone from New Zealand instantly recognise it as a symbol of their nation.

Here's an example of what would be called Kiwana:

And this is what was sent by Debbie from New Zealand - a handmade laminated collage featuring various items of Kiwiana in the shape of the two main Islands.

This picture from Wikipedia shows Kiwiana in action with a mural in painted in Otorohanga, New Zealand.

Isn't that a fun thing to learn about through a Culture Swap?  Thanks Debbie for your package.

If you want to know more about these swaps and how you can take part, have a look at the Worldwide Culture Swap page.

Send us a link to your blog posts related to worldwide culture and we will feature them on the site, include a link back to your site and of course give you full credit.  Take a look at our monthly Culture Swapper Link Up for information.
